Troubleshooting Your Heating Issues

Turn to Charlton Oil Co Inc for heating system troubleshooting services. If your heating system is not running, below are some things to consider before calling for a service call:

  • Check to make sure the breaker in your fuse box has not been tripped.
  • Do you have fuel in your tank? Make sure you have not run out as the system will not run without it!

A Seamless Troubleshooting Experience

Check the batteries in your thermostat, as they do need to be replaced every so often, and make sure the thermostat is set to "heat" mode, and not "Cool" mode. Also make sure that your thermostat is set high enough (higher than the temp in the house) for it to kick on.

You can hit the reset button, which is usually a red button on the unit itself. If it does fire up and run that's wonderful, however you should still contact our office as there may be an underlying problem going on that you don't want to deal with on a cold winter night! Also please remember DO NOT hit the reset button more than once if the system did not fire up the first time you pressed it.

If after checking all these situations and your unit is still not running, it's time to call the service technician for help.

Winter Heating Tips and Recommendations

Watch Your Fuel Level:

You can use much more heating oil when the temperatures dip, we recommend that you don't let your tank go below 1/4 full before placing your next order. During extended sub-freezing temperatures our delivery drivers are very busy so deliveries can take longer. Please plan accordingly.

Snow Removal:

Keep our delivery drivers safe, always keep your driveway and pathway to your oil fill pipe clean of snow and ice. If you have an in-ground tank, please mark it for us, sometimes it is dark when we deliver. Plan ahead, order your oil before an upcoming snowstorm.

Emergencies:

Did you know? If you get to the point where you know you are going to run out of oil before your delivery arrives, supplement your oil supply before you run out. It will avoid inconvenience and sometimes expensive start-ups, and more importantly, keep you warm. You can add other fuels from the distillate family to your oil tank.

Diesel fuel (either on-road or off-road) or kerosene (either clear or dyed). While these fuels will be more expensive than heating oil, they all burn safely in your oil burner. A good rule of thumb for most homes is five gallons/day during cold weather.
